Dr Natasha Sutherland HCPC-registered & Chartered Counselling Psychologist LondonDr Natasha Sutherland:

HCPC-registered & Chartered Counselling Psychologist (BPS)

Hello, I’m Natasha Sutherland, a Counselling Psychologist with over 16 years’ experience helping adults, young people, and couples overcome a wide range of difficulties.

My Approach:
Given your situation, personality and history are all uniquely yours, you need a therapy approach that’s tailored to you. Still, every client comes to their first therapy session for a similar reason.

You’re struggling, it hurts, and change feels so essential and yet so difficult. You’ve tried making things better, but nothing has worked or, if it has, only briefly.

You’re fed up with feeling this way, don’t like how you react, don’t want to be battling the world, or other people, or your own mind anymore. You’re out of ideas and want help finding another way.

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and people often feel apprehensive, but the right support can be life-changing. I offer a free 20-minute telephone consultation as an opportunity to discuss what you’re looking for, ask any questions you may have, and get a sense for whether working together feels like the right fit.

In sessions, I aim to create a warm, welcoming space where you can feel safe to be yourself and confident that you’re being listened to without judgement. Building a trusting, supportive therapeutic relationship is at the heart of my work and forms the foundation for exploring patterns that may be keeping you stuck, clarifying what matters most to you, and finding practical ways to support meaningful change in your life.

My doctoral training in psychology allows me to truly tailor my approach to each client and the concerns they bring. I see therapy as a collaborative process that we shape together, making for a unique relationship and a unique piece of work. In adapting my style to what suits you best, I can draw on a number of different theories and techniques.

I am trained and experienced in cognitive-behavioural, psychodynamic, existential, humanistic, and systemic approaches, with a particular interest in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT).

Training and experience:
I completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology at University College London (UCL), followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Psychotherapy at Regent’s University, and a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology at City, University of London. This led to HCPC registration and Chartered Membership of the British Psychological Society (CPsychol). I have also had further specialist training in a range of approaches, including Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), CFT, ACT, CBT enhanced for eating disorders (CBT-E) and Maudsley Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults (MANTRA).

I have worked within one of the UK’s largest NHS eating disorder services since 2020 and was appointed as a Senior Psychologist in 2022. I have extensive experience supporting adults and young people with eating disorders and complex presentations, and I work collaboratively with professionals across disciplines to provide holistic, joined-up care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Should I Seek Therapy?

Many people, new to this type of help, believe that they need to be suffering from “mental illness” or serious “psychological problems”, or be in crisis in order for therapy and counselling to be appropriate for them. This is a common misconception; anyone can benefit from therapy when it comes to helping you deal with your personal feelings and problems, make positive changes in your life, and understand yourself better.

So what is therapy and counselling? If you’re new to this world then the first steps can sometimes be the most difficult. Therapy can be a very effective treatment for a whole range of personal problems covering areas from physical and emotional problems, different types of behavioural disorders, through to human sexuality issues and a host of wellbeing and complementary therapy techniques.

Any problem you have that is causing you concern, anxiety or distress is a valid and appropriate reason to reach out and find a therapist and talk to them about it. Far from something to be ashamed of, acknowledging your vulnerability and asking for help is a sign of maturity and strength.

If you feel that you have a desire and are committed to making changes in your life in order to overcome your current problems and achieve more long-term satisfaction, psychological wellbeing and personal fulfilment, then you are ready to seek therapy. We are here to help you work through a wide range of therapy issues that might be troubling you.

Will Information About Me Be Safe & Secure?

It is quite normal to be hesitant when it comes to sharing private and intimate information about yourself with a stranger. You may fear that you will receive judgment from your therapist, or that your therapist will share your details with others.

HQ Therapy Rooms takes your privacy and confidentiality very seriously. Our therapists are required to keep everything said in therapy sessions between you, just like your doctor is required to keep your records private.

For therapy to be effective, there must be unconditional trust built between you and your therapist, and this relies on a shared understanding of confidentiality. It applies to the outside world as well: it is standard practice for therapists not to acknowledge their clients if they run into them outside of the therapy rooms in order to help protect their client’s confidentiality. Read our full privacy policy for more information.
