Chinese Medicine Practitioner: Acupuncture & Tuina
My name is Patrizia Gaio and I am a qualified practitioner in Chinese Medicine, specialising in Acupuncture and Tuina, working at HQ Therapy Rooms in Hackney, London E8. These ancient practices come from the Eastern tradition and they apply the principles of Chinese Medicine to promote physical and emotional health and wellbeing.
Tuina, (Medical Massage) is less well known to the general public, but it can be traced as the foundation principles of many more popular therapies including Shiatsu, Osteopathy and Reflexology.
Tuina is very effective in balancing deficiency and excess in the functioning of the organs, as well as dredging, stretching, realigning and warming the tissues. Working mainly with the sinews and cutaneous channels, it is useful for muscular-skeletal problems by releasing tensions and stagnations. The treatment has considerable benefits on the mind as well. Different techniques and levels of manipulation vary from a gentle touch to deeper bodywork, depending on the nature of the issue and the physical qualities of the client.
Acupuncture can treat a much wider variety of conditions. It is very effective in the transformation and moving of the body substances, including blood, body fluids, and qi, that govern body functions on a physical and emotional level. For this reason, Acupuncture is a successful treatment for digestive and weight disorders, breathing problems, menstrual, fertility and menopausal issues, as well as emotional distress, anxiety, PMT and insomnia, to name a few.
I believe in the self-healing ability of the body when it is provided with adequate conditions to do so. My own holistic approach to health consists of taking care of my diet, sleep and exercise, as well as my thoughts and emotions. I believe in this process one can come to an understanding of habits and identification with them. With increased awareness, many unhealthy patterns affecting our wellbeing can be broken.
The main aim of the treatments is to initiate change in the client’s body and the patterns that lie behind each condition. To help the unfolding of the change, I provide my clients with advice and information regarding diet, lifestyle, and exercise. By adopting this information as part of the ‘post-treatment self-care’, the client’s life will be positively affected in a lasting manner.
The frequency of the treatments required depends on the nature of the condition and the receptivity of each individual. Acute conditions generally require more frequent sessions, while chronic ones need less frequent treatments, but over longer periods of time.
