Articles of Faith: A Rational Foundation for Belief in Christ and His Church, (Paperback)

I have devoted my professional life in scientific research to the pursuit of truth following strict protocols based on reason and logic. I have had the opportunity to publish over a dozen articles in peer-reviewed journals and to present at many technical conferences. These are the formats and forums of science with which I am extremely familiar. From time to time, I have found myself engaged in conversations with colleagues regarding personal beliefs about religion and the implications for one's calling as a scientist. Often, the colleague will imply a need for a compartmentalization of thought to resolve a perceived incompatibility between scientific truth and religious belief. I have always refused to concede that point. Moreover, I will brook no cognitive dissonance between my personal and professional lives. Reason must govern both my chosen religion as well as my chosen career as a scientist. <p>I first thought of the idea of writing down some key points about the reasoning behind my own religious convictions as an <i>aide-memoire</i> against the conversations mentioned previously, since they tend to occur only infrequently and unpredictably. Over the years, it occurred to me to use a format well-known to scientists everywhere, that of a journal publication, in order to capture the ideas in a more rigorous, stand-alone format. Four of these "articles" are compiled in this collection dealing in turn with atheism, Christianity, the various Christian denominations, and the Catholic Church specifically. These papers are meant to present my own reasoned conclusions to clearly-stated hypotheses using the methodology outlined in each article. It is hoped that this approach will be helpful to like-minded individuals who seek to reconcile personal faith with objective truth.</p>
