• Details:  This is a very traditional oil and vinegar dispenser.  It is hand painted with a colorful rooster. These were primarily imported from Japan, however, there are many that came from Italy and Portugal.  Ours are not marked so we are unable to confirm origin.  This one is missing the stoppers, corks can be used in place of the ceramic stoppers. This would be ideal as kitchen decor, or for a farmhouse/ country style home.  We hope you enjoy it however you decide to use it.

• Condition:  Vintage - Used. Good Vintage Condition.  There is some discoloration on the back, please see pictures.  There are no chips, cracks on this piece, however, it is missing the stoppers.  Corks can be used in place of the original ceramic stoppers.  Please review all pictures and make sure you love this item before purchasing, we can't accept returns.  Please remember these are VINTAGE and ANTIQUE items, they are NOT new, every effort has been made to show scratches, wear and tear and imperfections.

In Italy, the rooster has been considered a sign of good luck since the Renaissance.   There's a story about the very wealthy Medici family who's only rivals were the Pazzi family.  The Pazzi family wanted to assassinate the Medici family and take over the village so they devised a plan to attack them after one of the very large parties that Giuliano Medici and his family often gave.  However, after the party, as the assassins were trying to sneak into the town, they crossed a yard full of roosters, who scared, started to crow very loudly and woke up Guiliano and his guards.  The assassins were caught and in true Medici family fashion, they threw another party to celebrate the roosters and ordered pitchers in the shape of roosters to be made as a symbol of good luck.  This supposedly happened in 1478 so it is a very long standing Italian tradition.
