Valentina Hamilton

Psychodynamic and Attachment Based Counselling and Psychotherapy

There are times when we all struggle. This can be triggered by a recent event, relationship difficulties, complicated early experience, or simply being overwhelmed by a hectic life. Most of us know how invaluable a good friend can be during these times. However they may feel too close and we often don’t want to complicate these relationships. A therapist is not a friend or a part of your life, this distance can make it feel safer and easier.

Counselling/ therapy is not magical, I do not hold all of the answers and cannot change a difficult past. However, the process of sharing hidden, messy thoughts can be surprisingly powerful.  It can begin to help you to disentangle them intellectually and emotionally, and helps to put them into perspective. This can lead to surprising changes – greater confidence and greater resilience in managing difficult situations and generally lead to a more fulfilling life.

I aim to provide a safe space where it is possible to talk, and get to know you, about the things that cause worry and stress as well as those things you enjoy and give a sense of well-being and fun.

I encourage people to attend sessions on a weekly basis as this continuity helps to build a relationship. Some people have counselling for just 6 – 12 sessions, Others will find it helpful to remain longer as this allows a relationship of increasing trust where it feels safer to become more of yourself and this is when deeper change is more likely to take place.

I am a BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) accredited Counsellor and Psychotherapist. I qualified at Birkbeck College in 2004 and have over 30 years of related work. During this time I have had a lot of experience with many different people from diverse backgrounds. I have experience with a wide range of issues including:  anxiety and stress, depression, low self-esteem and self-confidence, panic attacks, loss, bereavement, disability, illness, relationship problems, physical, sexual and emotional abuse, addiction, redundancy and self-harm. I have particular understanding of issues around loss, bereavement, disability and chronic illness.

My training was psychodynamic my individual style has developed with experience of what has been most effective in helping people achieve positive change. I have come to incorporate attachment and systemic thinking amongst others, I am not dogmatic about my approach and will adjust to different needs.
