Amy Lou Womack Integrative Art Psychotherapist

Amy Lou Womack:

Trainee Integrative Art Psychotherapist

My name is Amy Lou Womack, I am an integrative art psychotherapist working in the low-cost therapy and counselling service at HQ Therapy Rooms in Hackney, London E8.

I am registered as a trainee member of BAAT and in the second year of a Masters in Integrative Arts Psychotherapy at the Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education (IATE). I also have an Advanced Diploma in Therapeutic and Educational Application of the Arts from IATE and a Higher Education Certificate in Counselling and Counselling Skills from Birkbeck University.

I think it is important that you, as my client, feel safe and heard, I want to offer you a place to come and be yourself, a place to share what it is that has brought you here. Creating an open and honest relationship together, for us to journey into the reality that is your life. A relationship where you can explore more sensitive topics in safety, knowing that you will not be judged but will be met with understanding and compassion.

My studies and practice in Integrative therapy have meant that I can adapt my therapeutic approach to your needs. Allowing me to use a wide range of theories and ways of working to support our sessions together, so that you can get the most out of your therapy.

The use of the arts is a powerful way of expressing yourself, it is a medium that can help us explore topics and emotions on a deeper level. It is a form of communication that is beyond the verbal and it can allow the creator to hold difficult emotions or topics away from themselves, and into the object of the artwork. Then together we can explore the artwork created, looking at the way it was made and the meanings and intentions behind it, to inform us, often producing a deeper understanding of what is trying to be communicated. You can then look at the manifestation of your thoughts and feelings as separate from yourself, allowing you to be explored it in different ways, this can then hopefully open up ways of managing them and moving forward.

Art is a brilliant medium for therapy, it is a powerful tool that can be used in lots of different forms, such as:

  • Imagination – working with metaphor and the creation of safe places.
  • Painting and drawing
  • Use of images – ones that the client brings into the session or that I introduce to explore.
  • Sculpture – working with clay or other found materials.
  • Music – listening and creating.
  • Body Work – working with breath, tension, and movement.
  • Poetry and literature – creating and reading.
  • Drama – role-playing, either together or with an empty chair
  • Sand tray – use of objects in a sand tray to create ways of exploring different topics.
  • Puppets – created or provided.
  • Dance and movement – to help express ourselves through the use of the body.

This is by no means an exhaustive list and if there is an art form you would like to use in a session, we can discuss this and see what feels right.
