Chula Goonewardene (BACP):
Operations Manager & Senior Counsellor
My name is Chula Goonewardene and I am a BACP registered Counsellor & Psychotherapist who spent my former years as a musician, starting as a classically trained Pianist and Violinist, became a self-taught Guitarist and Drummer, and then enjoyed a professional career in music during my 20’s.
Unfortunately, the Rock & Roll lifestyle led me into a downward spiral of Heroin addiction, until I was fortunate enough to come into 12-Step recovery in June 2003, via Clouds House.
I joined the voluntary sector of the Substance Misuse field in March 2005, became a qualified Motivational Interviewing Practitioner and Advanced Group Facilitator, in addition to gaining an NVQ4 in Health & Social Care; Practice & Management.
I have worked with over 500 clients in community-based treatment as a Drug & Alcohol Practitioner, moving into Treatment Management, Training and Consultancy in 2010, whilst at North Westminster D&A Service, and then became a Clinical Pathway Manager, on an Honorary Contract with Camden & Islington NHS Trust, until November 2016.
Alongside my role at S2R, I have a thriving private practice on Harley Street; CM Therapy, am a feature writer for Intervene magazine and a Guest Lecturer on the Addiction Psychology and Counselling MSc at London South Bank University.
I still play the drums and practice my Tai Chi as often as possible, and coming from a Buddhist family; I use this philosophy to enhance both my personal and professional life.’
