Claire Gribble Integrative Arts Psychotherapist

Claire Gribble:

Trainee Integrative Arts Psychotherapist

My name is Claire Gribble, I am a trainee integrative arts psychotherapist and a member of the British Psychological Society (MBPpS) working in the low-cost therapy and counselling service at HQ Therapy Rooms in Hackney, London E8.

I am registered as a trainee member of the UK Council of Psychotherapists (UKCP) and I will soon begin the final year of my Masters in Integrative Arts Psychotherapy (IAP), at the Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education (IATE). I hold a BA in Fine Art and Psychology and for many years, I worked as a teacher in Primary and Special Educational Needs settings, this was the inspiration for my change of career. I wanted to offer emotional support to both children and adults, through the arts.

Throughout my career, I have turned to the arts to provide people with another form of communication, when words may be hard to find. I have worked with clients suffering from both grief and loss.

Using the sand tray, along with visual images, has enabled clients to unlock some deeply rooted emotions, whilst providing a sense of containment. On my current placement, I am delivering trauma-informed Art Therapy to clients who have experienced their first episode of psychosis. Once again, the arts feature as a mechanism to support the various traumatic experiences my clients have been through.

Using the arts has enabled my patients to reflect on their past and begin to notice patterns and behaviours, whilst also revealing some unconscious parts of themselves.

Within sessions, I offer a warm, non-judgemental and empathic space, allowing my clients to use their therapeutic hour as they would like to. It can sometimes feel daunting to use the arts, so please be aware that no artistic experience is necessary to access the various mediums I can offer, these are:

  • Imagination – using metaphor or symbols to help describe experiences.
  • Painting and drawing – using any medium.
  • Clay – to create sculptures that may include found materials.
  • Use of images – through postcards, photography or the client’s own.
  • Music – sharing songs, listening and creating.
  • Body Work – working with breath, tension, and movement.
  • Poetry and literature – creating and reading.
  • Drama – role-playing, either together or with an empty chair.
  • Sand tray – placing objects within the sand tray to tell a story.
  • Puppets – created or provided.

At the beginning of your sessions, you may want to experiment with various art forms, and this is most welcome. I will respect whatever you want to bring into your therapy sessions, in a holistic and compassionate way.

I am available some mornings and evenings, offering online or telephone support, at a time most suitable for you. I look forward to working with you and offer either short-term and long-term therapy.
