Alexander Technique & Buteyko Breathing Practitioner
Hello! My name is Daniela Sangiorgio, I am Italian and qualified as an Alexander Technique teacher and a Buteyko Breathing practitioner working in London since 2018.
I decided to train in both disciplines because I was always battling with a lack of energy and embodiment. My background is in the legal profession. I have an English and Italian Law degree and worked as a paralegal. I took a career break to have children and then trained as a Kodåly teacher. While working for the North London Colourstrings I trained in the above disciplines.
As well as teaching adults and teenagers at my private practice and at HQ Therapy, I give talks and run regular workshops. I am the founder of the ‘Alexander Technique for mums and babies’ and co-founder of ‘Are you suffering from 21st Century Posture’.
I also practice the Alexander Technique on musicians once a week at the Royal College of Music.
The Technique is an educational process and teaches you the tools to co-ordinate your mind, body and emotions. It makes you aware of your habits, allows you to explore ways of releasing unnecessary muscular tension and to gain balance and poise. As well as reducing physical pain such as back and neck pain, it deals with repetitive strain injuries common in many professions, helps with posture, sciatica, hypermobility, stress and more. Starting the Technique is equivalent to embarking on a new journey, the journey of working on yourself to live a healthy life.
A session lasts 50 to 60 minutes during which you will explore some movements, i.e. sitting, standing, walking that will help you become aware of where you hold excessive muscular tension. With the gentle touch of my hands, you will be guided into noticing and exploring the movements in your body. As part of the session, there is a 15 min ‘constructive rest’, lying down with awareness, which will allow your back to regain springiness, agility and mobility.
Buteyko Breathing Therapy:
Buteyko is a breathing method that helps you to regulate breathing disorders. Recognised by the medical profession, it reduces asthma attacks and dependency on medication. It also deals with panic attacks, sleep apnea, hyperventilation and more. Each session lasts about 45 minutes during which you will be trained to breathe through your nose with a small quantity of air.
You will be required to do some regular daily exercises three times a day (a set of exercise lasts 15 minutes). These exercises focus on nasal breathing, breath-holding and relaxation in order to reduce hyperventilation.
