Alicia McDermott:
Relationship Therapist & Individuals Counsellor (BACP)
Hello, and a warm welcome. I gather you are here because you feel a bit stuck or unfulfilled? I’m a relationship therapist, so I want to say first that relationships can be so hard, often the ones that we care about the most.
Whether you are coming to see me as a couple or on your own, my focus is the same: to help you understand what’s happening for you and in your relationships, and to facilitate you feeling less stuck.
I specialise in working with people who feel lost in painful cycles, whether that’s arguments that never resolve, a lack of physical intimacy, some emotional distance, or co-parenting issues.
Or, those who want to heal from a betrayal such as infidelity, or work out what to do next, i.e stay together or work towards a separation.
In our work, I’ll help you slow down, have a look at what’s really going on and find ways to feel better. My expertise is in helping people in fraught relationships to communicate in a way that can be heard.
I’ll offer structure and safety, and facilitate difficult conversations, while striving to nurture the connection between you and your loved ones.
In my own life, I’ve learned that meaningful connection is the source of safety and fulfilment. And it’s when we can truly connect to ourselves and our needs that we can then begin to connect more significantly with others.
Initially, I trained in Gestalt, which means exploring the parts of you that make up the whole of you, and attending to what’s happening in the very moment.
This model can be somatic and holds the viewpoint that everything is connected. Later, I added Integrative Relationship Training to my practice, training with Terry Real, Esther Perel and Ellyn Bader.
I combine Neuroscience, Attachment Theory, Gestalt, Somatic work, Differentiation, and Coaching in my work. I encourage Personal Responsibility while fostering a warm, human, relational approach.
And lastly, I believe that humour and the hard stuff can co-exist. So, we can also enjoy some lightness too – if that appeals.
