Mohini Barr:
Humanistic & Gestalt Counsellor (MBACP)
I am a humanistic and Gestalt counsellor who believes therapy can go beyond talking and being listened to. My approach can include an array of creative experiments rooted in Gestalt therapy as well as Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and drawing from years of experience practising and teaching hatha yoga, I can integrate breathing, mindfulness, and conscious movement into the therapeutic process.
To address the interconnection between mind and body, I like to focus on mapping primary emotions in the here and now. Primary emotions are: happiness, sadness, anger, excitement, and anxiety.
When a client brings up a feeling such as guilt, shame, or frustration, I am likely to make an invitation for how the feeling (e.g., guilt) might be manifesting as one of the primary emotions, if any. Primary emotions are somatic, or manifested in the body. My approach aims to integrate mind and body in order to improve emotional intelligence and expand awareness.
Being a humanistic therapist, my style is person-centred or client-led and relational. The therapy session is your space, and I follow where you lead. The therapeutic relationship – how we spontaneously relate with each other – shapes this process, which can lead to trust and mutuality unique to the therapeutic alliance between counsellor and client.
I integrate Transactional Analysis and Attachment Theory to help make sense of how family history, nature, and nurture might be impacting healing, growth, and well-being. I am skilled in noticing and acknowledging how society and societal or cultural pressures might impact a client’s identity and therapeutic process.
I have a trauma-informed approach, and I am trained and experienced working with clinical depression, anxiety, self-harm, eating disorders, body dysmorphia, autoimmune conditions, childhood trauma, abuse, and PTSD.
I am experienced and interested in working with gender related issues, e.g., how family and society shape and pressure men, women, and non-binary individuals in unique ways, and sexuality with its many aspects, from libido to sexual orientation and relationship dynamics, including relationship diversity (arranged/religious marriages, queer relationships, polyamory, etc.).
I take clients on long and short-term contracts, and tailor my approach to your needs in the here and now.
