James Woodward Family Therapist Highbury London N5James Woodward:

Family Therapist London (UKCP / Social Work England)

I am a qualified Systemic and Family Psychotherapist and Social worker with over 13 years of experience working with individuals and families across local authority and NHS settings.

My approach:
Through our work I will offer a space to talk confidentially about the issues you may be facing, think with you about the sources of these and seek out opportunities for change through understanding and self-discovery.

I work in a way that focuses on relationships, interactions and how these impact upon your sense of self and potentially maintain the problems you experience. This allows us to identify unhelpful patterns which may be present and so provide the opportunity for change.

This can be by looking at generational patterns passed down to us through our families and how these stories, especially in relationships, impact how we relate to one another. I use an approach that is non-blaming which aims to move the problem from being situated in a person to being placed in a system or family. This can be particularly useful when working with couples and families as it allows those involved to come together to face the problem together as oppose to placing the blame on each other.

During our work we will start by agreeing a goal together. This ensures, especially in a family or couple, that we are on the same page in regards to the outcome we are working towards. It also allows us to reflect on the goal throughout the work to see how the work has progressed and whether the goal is still one shared by everyone.

My work will always be led by you and the outcomes you want to achieve, though I will challenge you from time to time.

My practice is grounded in curiosity, compassion, and a deep respect for each person’s story. I pay close attention to how culture, identity, and life experiences shape the way we relate to one another and also the stories we tell about ourselves. Part of the work will be thinking about these stories and how they impact upon how we engage and navigate with the world and our relationships.

Fees:
For individuals I charge £80 for 50 minutes sessions and for couples or a family I charge between £130-£150 and we can discuss this when we meet. If you get in contact we will start our work by having a 15 minute consultation, usually over video to think about what is currently impacting you and what you would like to work on.

This will also give you the chance to meet me, find out what our work would look like and get a feeling of whether I would be the right fit for you. I currently have space to see clients Monday evening after 5pm.

If you would be interested in working with me please feel free to contact me on [email protected] to find at time that suits you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Should I Seek Therapy?

Many people, new to this type of help, believe that they need to be suffering from “mental illness” or serious “psychological problems”, or be in crisis in order for therapy and counselling to be appropriate for them. This is a common misconception; anyone can benefit from therapy when it comes to helping you deal with your personal feelings and problems, make positive changes in your life, and understand yourself better.

So what is therapy and counselling? If you’re new to this world then the first steps can sometimes be the most difficult. Therapy can be a very effective treatment for a whole range of personal problems covering areas from physical and emotional problems, different types of behavioural disorders, through to human sexuality issues and a host of wellbeing and complementary therapy techniques.

Any problem you have that is causing you concern, anxiety or distress is a valid and appropriate reason to reach out and find a therapist and talk to them about it. Far from something to be ashamed of, acknowledging your vulnerability and asking for help is a sign of maturity and strength.

If you feel that you have a desire and are committed to making changes in your life in order to overcome your current problems and achieve more long-term satisfaction, psychological wellbeing and personal fulfilment, then you are ready to seek therapy. We are here to help you work through a wide range of therapy issues that might be troubling you.

Will Information About Me Be Safe & Secure?

It is quite normal to be hesitant when it comes to sharing private and intimate information about yourself with a stranger. You may fear that you will receive judgment from your therapist, or that your therapist will share your details with others.

HQ Therapy Rooms takes your privacy and confidentiality very seriously. Our therapists are required to keep everything said in therapy sessions between you, just like your doctor is required to keep your records private.

For therapy to be effective, there must be unconditional trust built between you and your therapist, and this relies on a shared understanding of confidentiality. It applies to the outside world as well: it is standard practice for therapists not to acknowledge their clients if they run into them outside of the therapy rooms in order to help protect their client’s confidentiality. Read our full privacy policy for more information.
