Sophia-Marie Korpiun Counselling Psychologist and Integrative Psychotherapist London E8Sophia-Marie Korpiun:

Trainee Counselling Psychologist & Integrative Psychotherapist (BPS, UKCP student member)

Hello and Welcome! My name is Sophia-Marie Korpiun and I’m working online through the low-cost therapy and counselling service at HQ Therapy Rooms.

I am a registered trainee with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and hold graduate membership with the British Psychological Society (BPS). I am currently working towards obtaining a doctorate in Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy at the Metanoia Institute in Ealing.

Alongside HQ Therapy, I am working as a trainee for the Metanoia Counselling and Psychotherapy Service (MCPS) where I see clients face-to-face for short- and long-term work.

My background:
During the 2015-2016 German refugee crisis I worked with children, adolescents, adults and families. I supported them after their traumatic journey to safety and guided them through the process of integrating into a new culture and making a new home in Germany.

I was previously a Recovery Outreach Worker at Hestia, a London-based mental health charity. I supported a broad range of clients with issues ranging from body dysmorphia, post-traumatic stress disorder and hoarding disorder to paranoid schizophrenia.

I have also worked to support individuals and families online, face-to-face and over the telephone at a range of organisations.

My approach:
Training as a Counselling Psychologist and Integrative Psychotherapist means that my work is integrative and relational.

I strongly believe that all therapeutic modalities work, but they work differently for different people. As an Integrative Psychotherapist, I utilise different therapeutic modalities to best suit you and your evolving needs. My focus will be on finding an approach that works best for you.

I believe the foundation for successful work is the therapeutic relationship. This means I focus on getting to know you and put the way we relate to one another at the heart of our work together. I believe that the way you experience relationships in your life can play out in the therapeutic space so I want to explore this with you.

What I can offer you:

  • A confidential space where we can jointly explore what’s going on for you in your life at the moment and what brings you to therapy.
  • A warm, empathetic and gentle environment to listen – without judgement – to what you bring. I remember how scary starting therapy can be – unpacking difficult topics in front of a stranger. I will be led by what feels comfortable for you.
  • I want to promote openness to differing outlooks on religion, spirituality, relationships and sexuality. Everyone is welcome.
  • My understanding of the therapeutic process is that you already hold within you the courage, strength, and capacity to get through difficult times. I am simply here to guide you along this process to discover these qualities within yourself.
  • A space to explore the parts of your life which are difficult and which might feel hidden from others. We can work together to effect meaningful change in your life, to address new challenges or to find new ways of approaching existing ones.
  • I offer therapy in both English and German.

I look forward to meeting you!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Should I Seek Therapy?

Many people, new to this type of help, believe that they need to be suffering from “mental illness” or serious “psychological problems”, or be in crisis in order for therapy and counselling to be appropriate for them. This is a common misconception; anyone can benefit from therapy when it comes to helping you deal with your personal feelings and problems, make positive changes in your life, and understand yourself better.

So what is therapy and counselling? If you’re new to this world then the first steps can sometimes be the most difficult. Therapy can be a very effective treatment for a whole range of personal problems covering areas from physical and emotional problems, different types of behavioural disorders, through to human sexuality issues and a host of wellbeing and complementary therapy techniques.

Any problem you have that is causing you concern, anxiety or distress is a valid and appropriate reason to reach out and find a therapist and talk to them about it. Far from something to be ashamed of, acknowledging your vulnerability and asking for help is a sign of maturity and strength.

If you feel that you have a desire and are committed to making changes in your life in order to overcome your current problems and achieve more long-term satisfaction, psychological wellbeing and personal fulfilment, then you are ready to seek therapy. We are here to help you work through a wide range of therapy issues that might be troubling you.

Will Information About Me Be Safe & Secure?

It is quite normal to be hesitant when it comes to sharing private and intimate information about yourself with a stranger. You may fear that you will receive judgment from your therapist, or that your therapist will share your details with others.

HQ Therapy Rooms takes your privacy and confidentiality very seriously. Our therapists are required to keep everything said in therapy sessions between you, just like your doctor is required to keep your records private.

For therapy to be effective, there must be unconditional trust built between you and your therapist, and this relies on a shared understanding of confidentiality. It applies to the outside world as well: it is standard practice for therapists not to acknowledge their clients if they run into them outside of the therapy rooms in order to help protect their client’s confidentiality. Read our full privacy policy for more information.

It feels good to be listened to and to know that someone cares about you and wants to help. It is important that you find a therapist with whom you feel comfortable and can build a trusting relationship to help you make positive changes in your life.
